Maybe you are looking to improve your SEO and spreading link juice between your internal posts within your blog, or you are looking to link to external websites to show viewers additional resources.
This is going to be the easiest and simplest guide on how to add links in WordPress posts, both internal or external links. Let’s get started.
How to add internal links to your WordPress post
If you want to learn how to add links in WordPress posts, you need to understand what internal links are first.
An Internal link is a link you want to send the viewer to “within” your own blog. In my image example here, I have a blog post on 10 automotive affiliate programs for creators to make money. I have another blog post I created earlier, about YouTube Shorts Affiliate Marketing, that I want to link to.
This helps spread link juice from this post to that post (helps search engine optimization, improving keyword rank in google, and passing rank to other blogs).
In addition, if a viewer wants to learn more about YouTube Shorts affiliate marketing, they can click on my internal link to my WordPress post to go there and read more.
Alright let’s get into how to add links in WordPress posts.
First, open your WordPress dashboard by going to your WordPress admin page and logging in. On the left-hand side, make sure to click on “posts”.
Your posts page will appear. Go to the WordPress post that you want to add the link to, and click “edit” on the post.
The post can be a draft, or it can be published, it does not matter in this case.
Alright, so find the word or phrase you want to add the internal link to.
Highlight the text, and click the “link” button, highlighted in the image above.
Add the internal link from your other blog in here.
Before you click “enter”, there are more options below on how to add links in WordPress posts.
- Open in new tab – this option will make the link open in a new window. I prefer to always have this option on because I want people to have my blog open still. If it is not clicked, the user will be taken away from your blog.
- Set to nofollow – if this is set, you will “not” pass link juice through your blog post to your internal link. This isn’t good for SEO, so you don’t want this option on. When learning how to add links in WordPress posts, you don’t want to set nofollow links most of the time.
- Set to sponsored – this is for sponsored posts. If someone paid you to make a sponsored post on your website, you’d have this option on.
After you have your options configured, click “enter” to add your internal link to your WordPress post. It is that easy on how to add links in WordPress posts! Now your text is highlighted with your WordPress internal link.
This will make the phrase or texts that you highlight “hyperlinked” which means when a viewer clicks on the text in your post, they will be taken to that internal post.
How to add outbound links in WordPress post
If you want to learn how to add links in WordPress posts, you need to understand what outbound links are. Sometimes they are referred to as an external link.
An outbound link is a link you want to send the viewer to “outside” of your own blog. These are good for SEO because Google wants to have the web interlinked to different resources.
This keeps engagement and people interested on the platform. In addition, you might want to show someone some statistics or link to an official website if you are reviewing a company’s products or services, etc.
First, open your WordPress dashboard by going to your WordPress admin page and logging in. On the left-hand side, make sure to click on “posts”.

Go to the WordPress post that you want to add the link to, and click “edit” on the post.

In my example here, I have a blog post on “Ahrefs vs Semrush Comparison Guide” comparing 2 keyword research tools.
I want to link to Ahrefs official site so that viewers have that reference if they want to check out the Ahrefs website.
I want to add the external link to the word “Ahrefs”.

Before you click “enter”, there are more options below when considering how to add links in WordPress posts.
- Open in new tab – this option will make the link open in a new window. I prefer to always have this option on because I want people to have my blog open still. If it is not clicked, the user will be taken away from your blog. In the case of an external website, they will be taken away from your blog so it is bad for your website.
- Set to nofollow – if this is set, you will “not” pass link juice through your blog post to the external link. You can choose this if you want, but standard SEO practices encourage you to make links “dofollow”. If you aren’t making any dofollow links to external websites, this could cause Google to think you are trying to be selfish and keep all link juice to yourself. After all, Google wants to promote an “open, collaborative space” in search. When learning how to add links in WordPress posts, I encourage you to use “dofollow” links.
- Set to sponsored – this is for sponsored posts. If an external company paid you to make this post on your blog, you can set this option so viewers know if is sponsored.
After you have your options configured, click “enter” to add your external link to your WordPress post. That is it on how to add links in WordPress posts! Now your text is highlighted with your WordPress external link.
